Along with the Bhagavad-Gita, Srimad-Bhagavatam and Ramayana, the MAHABHARATA is a major work of Vedic literature. With over a hundred thousand verses, it is probably the world's largest epic. It was composed in Sanskrit by Dvaipayana Vyasa about 5000 years ago. The Mahabharata contains the entire history of the world from creation to destruction, as well as all the spiritual knowledge of the Vedas. The Mahabharata is called the fifth Veda.

The core of the great work or the frame story is the story of the five Pandava brothers Yudhishtira, Bhima, Arjuna, Sahadeva and Nakula and their common consort Draupadi. Yudhishtira was the rightful heir to the throne of Maharaja Pandu, but was deprived of his rule through cunning and intrigue and banished to the forest with his brothers and their consort. It is told how their adversaries, the Kauravas headed by Duryodhana, tried again and again to kill them and how Krishna, the Eternal, who had appeared on earth to free them from the burden of godless villains, to protect the pious and to reintroduce the principles of eternal religion, helped and protected them, and - when finally, after twelve years of exile, there came an all-important battle in which millions of warriors lost their lives - even acted as the charioteer of the mighty Bharata hero Arjuna.

Mahabharata - Jewel of the Poets is a three-part summary of the Mahabharata consisting of (1) a retelling of the main story of the Mahabharata, (2) the spiritual essence of the Mahabharata in hundreds of quotations from conversations and teachings of the spiritual teachers who speak in the Mahabharata, and (3) instructive stories and fables told by the sages in the Mahabharata to convey diverse spiritual and ethical principles.
